This past weekend American Pharaoh won the Belmont Stakes and the 12th Triple Crown. On the 2nd of May American Pharaoh won the Kentucky Derby and May 16th he won the Preakness stakes.
American Pharaoh is owned by Ahmed Zayat, who has run horses in one or more of these three races before. This year he not only ran a horse in all three races but won all three of them.
Bob Baffert trained American Pharaoh. Bob is a well known trainer in the horse racing world and many of his horses have run in the races before. He has had horses win one or another of these races but not all three. Not only was this a big deal for the owner but Bob as the trainer as well.
Victor Espinoza was American Pharaoh's jockey for all but his maiden race. And in all the 7 races they ran in together they won. Victor was California Chrome's jockey as well. Last year Victor aboard California Chrome had a very good chance of winning the Triple Crown but didn't. This year aboard American Pharaoh he did win! :) The oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown and boy was he ever proud! :)
American Pharaoh made 8 starts and won 7 of them. In his maiden race Martin Gracia was his jockey and they finished 5th. His 2nd race ridden by Victor he finished 1st by 4 3/4 lengths. In his third race he finished 3 1/4 lengths ahead of the second place winner. 4th race he came in 1st by 6 1/4 lengths. The 5th race he won by 8 lengths. His 6th race was the Derby and that was a close one, he made it by just one length. The Preakness he won by 7 lengths. And the Belmont was won by 5 1/2 lengths.
The last Triple Crown was in 1978. Won by Affirmed who was owned by Harbor View Farm, trained by Laz Barrera and ridden by Steve Cauthen.
This year is a big one for all of the horses racing fans, I was so excited when I heard we had a Triple Crown winner!
