“Hey Mike. This isn’t your number so I didn’t know it was you calling,” Jessie replied.
“Yeah, my phone’s dead so I’m using a friend’s phone,” Mike explained.
“I see. Yes, Jack is here but I have Trevor on the other line. Can you call back in five minutes?”
“Sure Jessie, no problem. I’ll call back later,” and Mike hung up.
“Mike wants to talk to you,” Jessie told Jackie as she switched back to talking to Trevor.
Jackie went back to reading her book but not many minutes had passed before she tuned in to what Jessie was saying.
“Yeah, it has,” Mike argued.
“No it hasn’t and now because you interrupted me again before the first five minutes were up, the five minutes starts over.”
“Whose boss are you?” Mike laughed.
“Okay, I’m back, Trevor. Mike keeps bugging me, he wants to talk to Jack,” Jessie said, getting back on the phone with Trevor. A few minutes later, Jessie said.
“It has not been five minutes. But, can I call you later tonight? Mike is calling again so I am going to let him talk to Jack.”
“Sure Jess. We’ll talk later,” Trevor hung up.
“I said five minutes, Mike Murphy. Do you know how to read a clock?” Jessie said.
“I did read a clock. You’re the one who was talking so much that the time passed so fast for you,” Mike retorted.
“Whatever. Well I am going to be nice and let you talk to Jack because I just remembered it’s your mom’s birthday next week and you two have been planning things. So here is Jack,” Jessie handed Jackie the phone.
“You two crack me up!” Jackie said.
“Who doesn’t crack you up?” Mike laughingly asked.
“True. So whats up?” Jackie laughed.
“What? How are we to tell the two of you apart?” Andrew asked as Jessie and Jackie walked up to where their friends stood. They wore matching denim shirts and jeans. Jackie had curled her hair and tucked it up a bit so it would look shorter. Even their hats and jewelry was matching. Their boots were not but their jeans were covering most of the boots and they were a bit dusty so one couldn’t tell.
“Oh, that will be easy. Jack is skinnier then Jess. Because she won’t eat enough to keep a flea alive,” Tyler said, adding the last part because he was always teasing Jackie about how small she was.
“If I ate more food there would not be enough for you. And you’re the one who is always saying Trevor gets to the food first,” Jackie smilingly replied.
“Good comeback, Jackie!” Trevor laughed and lightly slapped Jackie on the back. “She’s learning from you,” Trevor tapped Jessie’s hat.
“As she should be,” Jessie said.
“And maybe not!” Jackie gave her sister a look.
Jackie and Jessie were the last of there group to arrive. Now that they were all there the fun would really begin.
They walked around a bit seeing the sights and talking with several of the other competitors.
“Lets get some food,” Andrew suggested after a while. Everyone agreed they would all like a little something to eat so headed in the direction off the food booths.
“Jackie, a text from Mom for you,” Mike held his phone out to Jackie. She took it and as they walked she texted back and forth with her godmother.
“Is that my Dad standing next to my Mom holding her hand?” Jessie asked looking at a couple who stood by the Taco place.
“Or is it your Mom standing next to your Dad?” Andrew joked.
“Something like that. Mama Jo!” Jessie called. Bobbie Jo turned her head. Brandon also turned at the sound of Jessie’s voice as he put his wallet away.
“Hey!” Mama Jo greeted them all as they walked over. Jackie was in the middle of her text conversation so was standing off to the side mostly hidden by the others.
“Howdy girl” Brandon said returning Jessie’s hug. After giving Bobbie Jo a hug Jessie stepped back and crossed her arms.
“How long have you been holding the hand of my Mama?” She asked looking as Brandon.
“Not too long, only about since we got here. I figured since she’s your mom and I’m your dad you wouldn’t mind me hanging out with her while I’m in town.” He winked at Jessie “I’ll stop when I leave town again after the rodeo.”
“You better not,” Jessie threatened then grinned at the two of them.
“All righty, I’ll remember that,” Brandon tipped Jessie’s hat up.
What none of them knew was that ten years ago the two had dated. But Brandon had been a wild young man and Bobbie Jo had broken up with him not wanting to deal with his wild ways. They had seen each other over the years and just been friends. They knew each other were still single but they had never tried again at a relationship until now.
“By the way, you’re lookin’ sharp tonight. I bet your driving all those boys crazy,” Brandon continued.
“Oh no, that would be Jack. I have had to stand guard over her. There have been so many that Trevor and Tyler have been busy helping,” Jessie said.
“Me too,” Brody pipped up.
“How could I forget you,” Jessie said sarcastically but with a smile.
“Where is Jackie?” Bobbie Jo asked.
“Right here,” Jackie spoke up as Jessie pulled her forward.
“Man alive! You are looking good,” Brandon whistled eyes twinkling.
“Whatever. Jessie looks just as good.” Jackie rolled her eyes. The others laughed.
I hope you enjoyed it, let me know what you think.
