One of my top 10 favorite books is Marcia Schuyler written by Grace Livingston Hill.
To save her family from disgrace, Marcia, a young woman not much more than a girl, marries the man her sister was engaged to.
In this new life of hers she struggles with being the wife of a man who does not love her, his disagreeable aunts, and unaccepting townspeople. Her sister finds out what Marcia did and is angry. What's more, a man she meets is determined to drag her name in the dirt when she rebuffs his attentions to her.
But the little red-headed girl next door sticks to her through thick and thin and Marcia and Miranda become good friends, Miranda coming to Marcia's rescue a few times.
Things become worse when Marcia receives a note calling her to a tavern a ways from town where, unknown to her, the villain awaits. Then when her sister shows up in town, Marcia believes all her dreams of happiness and love are ended.
I am still not sure just what it is about this book that makes such a favorite but I find myself reading it over and over. I adore Miranda and her temper. The struggle Marcia's husband goes through was well written I think. The villain was a perfectly hateable man. I also like reading the descriptions of the dresses, hats, and bonnets in this book.
