The Sound of Music dresses

Ahh here I am again, I found the real world too boring, so I am back to the world of SOM!  This post is to be on the dresses worn by Maria, Liesl and The Baroness.  If I were to ever stage this musical I would make the dresses more authentic (circa 1939-1942)  But this post is about the dresses from the movie.

Maria's blue dress is so beautiful!   I want to make one like it some day.  One of my sisters found a place that has a pattern here.  This is a picture of the real dress.  Maria wore this dress when she gets the Captain to sing and he sings Edelweiss with Liesl, and when The Captain proposes to her.  These are more of my favorite dresses that Maria wears.
The gold suit.
Do-Re-Mi.
My Favorite things (reprise 2.)

And Liesl's dresses.............the Sixteen Going on Seventeen dance dress with Rolf is the first SOM dress I will make.  I want to make it out of a dusky blue.  And Liesl's other dresses........
Edelweiss.
So Long Farewell.  Edelweiss Patterns also has a pattern for this dress.

The Baroness has some amazing dresses.
The dark peach.
Playing ball.
The red dress.

I have had fun joining in Celebrate Musicals Week.  But this next week I will have to make up for the time I spent doing this instead of the sewing, knitting, crocheting and writing I had planned.   Hoping everyone else had as much fun as I did. And thanks for reading!

"So Long, Farewell!"  For this time!

Favorite Characters from The Sound of Music

So my second post is going to be about the characters from SOM.

Liesl, I think, would have to be my all time favorite.   First of all, I love her dresses!  And I like the  relationship she has with her father.   She wants love from him who tucks away his feelings for his children.  Yet she understands him and that understanding is shown very well when they sing Edelweiss together.  I like the way she connects with the Captain after he loosens up.  And Liesl and Maria are fantastic!  Liesl detests Maria at first but later really looks to her for motherly advice.

And who doesn't like Maria!!!!!!!!!!  As the song says, "She is not a asset to the Abbey."  She knows nothing about being a governess, and believes in living life to its fullest.   She has a quick temper she uses often, a strong will, and is so funny!   And she makes a great second mother for the children.

The Captain is so strict and hard.  Then Maria enters his life!  They are hilarious!  I find the Captain rather comical but understand how his wife's death could change his life.

Uncle Max is by far the funniest character.  I love when The Captain, The Baroness and Max are driving in the car and they drive past the children.   And after the puppet show when he tells The Captain that the children are going to sing at the festival.

Rolf was my ideal  for a future husband when I was younger.  I go for the tall dark type now!  I like how he tells his lieutenant that, "they aren't here" in the musical.  In the movie he calls to his lieutenant but the Von Trapps get away in time.

Mother Abbess of course knows what is good for every one. I like the part when she tells Maria she is to be governess to Captain Von Trapp's seven children! =)  "A Captain with seven children.  What's so fearsome about that?"

The Baroness is not one of my favorite characters but she is an important one.  She is rather snobbish and I could play her if I was blonde.  I can't see a dark haired person playing The Baroness.  I could play a snobbish person very well, I think.   And the way she looks at Maria throughout her stay there.  I like the scene when she breaks off the engagement with the Captain.   And when the children are playing ball with her!  Too funny!!!!!

Writing and thinking about all of this really makes me want to act it out.  My three youngest sisters would play the three youngest children almost perfectly!

I have been having way to much fun reveling in SOM!  I need to get back to the real world. Sigh!

Favorite songs from The Sound of Music

This is the first of my posts on my chosen musical.  I have chosen to spotlight my favorite songs.

Sixteen Going on Seventeen: is a love song - cute, funny and a bit sad in the fact that Rolf is saying good bye to her as he was joining the Nazis.  It is true that girls of that age are totally unprepared and need someone older and wiser to guide them. The end is so dramatic!  Listening to this song today, I figured this must have been what gave me the idea I used to have when I was younger that the men had to be older than the women in a marriage.

Then later on when Maria and Liesl are singing it:
"Love in your heart wasn't put there to stay. Love isn't love 'til you give it away." I love that line! And "I'll wait, a year or two."

Edelwiess: I love this song - all about. "bless my homeland forever." The first time the song is sung I love how Liesl joins in with her father.  And he is looking at Maria.

And later when they sing at the concert how at the end everyone joins in.  So beautiful!

Climb Ev'ry Mountain:  "Climb ev'ry mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow, 'til you find your dreams."  Sometimes we all have another mountain to climb, stream to ford and rainbow to fallow until we find that dream.  I love this song, it just makes me want to keep going 'til I find my dream.

In the musical, An Ordinary Couple is the love song between the Captain and Maria.  In the movie it is replaced by Something Good, which I prefer.

Celebrating The Sound of Music!

I am joining in with my sister in Celebrate Musicals Week.   She was doing it and talking with me about what she was doing.  I guess I make a good bouncing board but hey what else are sisters for?! I use her as one! =)  We were talking about The Sound of Music and then she said "Hey....." so I decided to take part.  And I am having fun!

Celebrate Musicals Week is being hosted by Miss Amy Dashwood at her BLOG.

1.  What musical did you pick to "spotlight" this week and why?
The Sound of Music.

2.  How did you discover the musical you picked (hereinafter referred to as "your musical")?
I watched the movie when I was rather young.  It was the fall I was 7 if I am remembering right and I did not stay in the room to watch the end with the Nazis.

3.  If you had to pick three favorite songs from your musical, which ones would they be?
Sixteen Going on Seventeen, Climb Ev'ry Mountain,  Edelweiss.

4.  What's your least favorite song from your musical?
An Ordinary Couple

5.  Who are your favorite characters (choose up to three)?
Maria, The Captain, Liesl.

6.  Which versions of your musical have you seen/listened to, and which is your favorite?
The 1965 Movie Cast,  the Original Broadway Cast Recording.

7.   Is this your favorite musical of all time?  If not, what is?
Yes!

8.   Which cast album/musical soundtrack in your collection do you listen to the most?
The Movie Version.  It is the only one I have.

9.   What is your favorite costume from your musical?
Liesl's Sixteen Going on Seventeen dance dress.

10.  If you could change anything about your musical, what would you change?
I would make the costumes a little more authentic.  The Baroness would be a little more jealous of Maria.

11.  Which role(s) would you most like to play in any musical, if you had the opportunity to do so on stage?
Liesl

12.  If you could choose one performer to play any part in your musical, who would you choose and which part would you have them play?
This one is a tough one so think I'll pass on it.

13.  Do you consider yourself a musical theatre fan in general or do you just like a few musicals?
Just a few.

14.  Are you tired of the word "musical" yet?
Not yet!  But saying it so many times has gotten me thinking about where the word originated and so on.

15.  Turn your music playing device on shuffle (or utilize Pandora if you don't have one) and tell us the names of the first three show tunes that come up-- no cheating!  How do these rank on your favorites/most-listened-to list?
I can't do this right now as I can't shuffle a cassette tape. =)
